El compartir información y dialogar sobre el VIH y SIDA son elementos clave en la lucha contra esta epidemia. Este año, la XVII Conferencia Internacional sobre el SIDA (AIDS 2008) por primera vez va a proveer Centros paralelos de debate, mejor conocidos como “hubs”. Alrededor del mundo, estos centros proyectarán sesiones específicas de la conferencia, en vivo o pregrabadas. Las proyecciones pueden ser seguidas por debates informales entre los espectadores para entender como el contenido de la sesión puede ser aplicado a nivel local. ¡La buena noticia es que cualquiera puede montar un hub!
Los hubs son una buena manera de compartir conocimientos y prácticas que han tenido éxito con un público local, así como con otros profesionistas no especializados en el SIDA. También facilitan una colaboración más intensa entre redes locales y concientizan a la prensa, a un costo muy inferior al de la conferencia.
Los hubs independientes serán montados por organizaciones internacionales no lucrativas, comunidades locales (escuelas, sociedades de SIDA, organizaciones religiosas, gay, de mujeres y jóvenes, etc.), facultades de medicina, hospitales ó independientes. Los organizadores de la conferencia no brindarán apoyo económico ni logístico a los grupos que deseen montar un hub. Sin embargo, será posible promover los hubs en nuestro sitio de internet AIDS 2008 y se les ofrecerán contenido y lineamientos técnicos.
Lo único que se necesita es una sala con una computadora y un retro-proyector, una buena conexión a internet, un equipo de sonido propicio y personal que esté a cargo de la sesión.
Montar un hub implica:
· Contribuir a la lucha local contra el VIH y SIDA.
· Posicionar su organización como agente de cambio global.
· Atraer gente a su organización que no lo hubiera hecho si no fuera por el hub.
· Consolidar su red local y así facilitar nuevos enlaces u oportunidades comerciales.
Lo más importante es que los hubs sean divertidos, tanto para los participantes como para los organizadores locales. Dependiendo del tipo de organización, usted podrá invitar a un grupo para que toque música después de las sesiones y/u organizar un evento social que permita que la gente se conozca. ¡La idea es que sea un evento académico y social a la vez! El tamaño reducido del hub será un foro perfecto para fomentar enlaces y colaboraciones locales.
La entrada a las sesiones de hub tiene que ser gratuita, pero se puede cobrar por las bebidas, comida y otros productos que se vendan para financiar el hub.

Sharing information and talking about HIV and AIDS is one of the key elements to succeed in the fight against the epidemic. This year, the XVII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2008) will, for the first time in its history provide "hubs". These centres will host screenings of selected conference sessions, either live or delayed, around the world. The screening may also be followed by a moderated local discussion to see how the content of the session can be used locally. And the great news is: anyone can host a hub!
Hubs are a great way to distribute knowledge and best practices locally as well as to people who are not AIDS professionals. They also allow for much more intense local networking and media awareness at a fraction of the cost of going to the conference.
Independent Hubs will be put together by large international non-for-profit organisations, local communities (schools, AIDS societies, faith-based/gay/women/youth organizations, etc.), medical schools, hospitals or individuals. The conference organizers will not help these groups with the logistical or financial implications of hosting a hub, but will promote them through the official AIDS 2008 web site as well as providing technical guidelines and the feed (content) for free.
All that is needed is a meeting room with a computer and a projector, a good internet connection, a decent sound system and some staff to run the session.
Hosting a hub will:
contribute to the local fight against HIV and AIDS;
position your organization as a global change agent;
draw people to your organization that might not have known about it otherwise;
strengthen local networking in your area and maybe lead to new partnerships or business opportunities
Most importantly, a hub must be fun, both for the participants and for the local organizers. Depending on your organization type, you could invite a band to play some music after the sessions and/or organize a social event allowing people to get to know each other better. It should be an academic, as well as a social event and the smaller size of the hub makes it a perfect forum where strong local connections can be forged!
Entrance to the hubs must be free, but you could charge for drinks, food or other products you might sell to help finance your hub.
