Call for Papers The Global Arc of Justice:
Sexual Orientation Law Around the World
March 11-14, 2009
Los Angeles & West Hollywood, California The Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law and Public Policy, at UCLA School of Law, and the International Lesbian and Gay Law Association (ILGLaw) Conference will host "The Global Arc of Justice: Sexual Orientation Law Around the World" in Los Angeles and West Hollywood, California, U.S.A., from March 11-14, 2009. We will be accepting presentation and panel proposals until 17h00 Pacific Standard Time (i.e., 1700 GMT - 8) on Saturday, November 15, 2008. In addition to doctrinal and theory-based approaches, we welcome proposals that focus on practical skills or strategies as well as contributions from the social sciences. Topics may include (but are not limited to):
 national or regional discussions of GLBTIQ legal developments on issues such as violence, criminalization of sexuality, couples recognition, parenting rights, transgender rights/gender identity and expression rights, employment discrimination, military policy, youth and education issues, etc.;
 comparative law or international human rights law analyses of these issues;
 legal, political, or social theories about how GLBTIQ rights are advanced;
 discussion of recent national and international court cases using arguments based on equality, dignity, liberty, etc.;
 the globalization of human rights (Yogyakarta principles, etc.);
 challenges created by the diverse ways of conceptualizing sexual/gender identities for universal rights projects;
 the migration of GLBTIQ people including interjurisdictional recognition of rights and relationships;
 the effects of the demise of welfare states on GLBTIQ people;
 the effects of war and the war on terrorism on GLBTIQ people; and
 HIV/AIDS and human rights. Presentations focusing on issues in Spanish-speaking/Latin American countries are especially welcome. You may submit proposals on more than one topic. We hope to publish papers based on the presentations. We hope that the conference will reflect the diversity of viewpoints and experiences regarding the legal rights of sexual minorities throughout the world. However, due to time constraints we are unlikely to accommodate all submissions. If your presentation is not selected, this should not be seen to signify anything about the proposal's quality or value. Those interested in making a presentation should submit an abstract not later than 17h00 Pacific Standard Time (i.e., 1700 GMT - 8) on Saturday, November 15, 2008. Submissions by e-mail are encouraged. The criteria for selection will include:
 originality - the creation of new knowledge, ideas, analysis, solutions, or strategies;
 quality - soundness of analysis, appropriate use of methodologies, accuracy, and persuasiveness;
 importance - theoretical significance, practical usefulness, illumination of an interesting or difficult problem; and
 scope - consideration of a number of jurisdictions, potential impact upon the lives and work of many persons or jurisdictions. Page 2 of 2 Those interested in presenting at the conference should please submit the following for your presentation:
 the title;
 an abstract, outlining the presentation in not more than 250 words;
 the methods or data on which it will be based (e.g., practical experience; legal research); quantitative or qualitative research;
 your name and any institutional affiliations;
 your contact information;
 a short (1 paragraph) biography, for posting on the conference web site if selected
 (optional) a digital photo, for posting on the conference web site if selected
 any special presentation media needs (e.g., overhead projector, PowerPoint, video playback);
 for panels: please submit a panel description of no more than 250 words, and all of the information above for the moderator and panel participants. Submission deadline Saturday, November 15, 2008, 5:00 p.m. PST (17h00 GMT - 8). Acceptances will be made on a rolling basis and notifications will be sent by Wednesday, December 10, 2008.
