Academic English Course/Workshop for Students and Academic Staff in MexicoCity (Spring 2008)Este curso está dirigido a académicos, estudiantes y otras personas quetienen necesidad y deseo de desarrollar textos académicos en inglés. Elmismo está dirigido a personas con un nivel intermedio, alto o avanzadodel idioma, quienes necesitan mejorar o actualizar su inglés en un entornoacadémico para poder entrar en contacto y comunicarse con fluidez enconferencias internacionales, donde presenten sus trabajos einvestigaciones así como su presencia en instituciones donde el idiomaingles es la lengua de instrucción. Los cursos han sido desarrollados, enparticular, para los Delegados en las actividades académicas que organizaEnkidu Magazine, pero son abiertos a toda persona que desee mejorar suinglés.Courses Spring Semester 2008- Course AE 2008 1 (12 February - 7 March, 2008)- Course AE 2008 2 (5 May - 2 June, 2008)Enkidu Magazine provides a global forum for dialogue and debate, wherediverse voices from all over the world can come together, makeconnections, discuss topics of mutual interest and develop new ideasacross linguistic, cultural and academic barriers; where scientists in thehumanities and social sciences working with Queer Studies, Gender Studiesand related topics can meet and communicate about their work. Ourconferences are multi-lingual events in which we nourish and cultivateglobal community across language barriers.Delegates are free to use any of the official conference languages fortheir presentation, and translation with interpreter between theconference languages will be provided, but when possible, the AcademicCommittee of the Conference encourages that delegates present papers inother languages than their maternal language. In the Queer StudiesSymposium 2008, we will for instance have scholars whose native languageis English, presenting papers in Castillian, scholars with French asnative language, presenting in English, and native speakers of Castillianwho will present papers in English.Delegates (academic staff and students) from the UCSJ who would like topresent papers in English at the Queer Studies Easter Symposium areencouraged to do so and we organise a pre-conference course in AcademicEnglish for students who want to prepare a paper in English but need someadditional training in grammar, style and academic expresssions.The course has been developed for students and staff at the UCSJ butanyone interested in improving their academic English is welcome to signup.The course will consist in 4 2 hours sessions covering the following issues:Academic ReadingAcademic WritingAcademic ListeningSeminar SkillsResearch SkillsLectures and Note-taking skillsReflection around the nature of multicultural and multilingual communicationCourse Aims:Develop academic writing and study skillsImprove language and fluencyBuild knowledge of current teaching and learning methodsBuild confidenceCourse ContentWriting: academic style, editing and correcting, organising and planninghigh quality essays, effective summary writing and note-taking skillsReading: focused reading activities linked to writing tasks. Skimming,scanning and inferring meaning from context, reading under deadlinepressureListening: improve your listening comprehension for conference sessions.Conference Skills: become more confident in participating in conferencediscussions, voicing opinion and presenting spoken information.Research Skills: Critical thinking, searching for relevant information,appropriate referencing styles and using citations.During the course, the students work on their own papers while receivinginternet tuition by the academic committee of the conference, as well ascomments and suggestions during the 4 sessions.The level of tuition provided will be appropriate to the abilities of theparticipants. During the first class there will be a language placementtest.The programme uses a workshop and needs-based format. Participants arerequired to produce pieces of writing representative of their subjectareas and academic interests in acceptable formats for regular evaluation.On the oral side, students are expected to give frequent formal seminarpresentations. Active participation in class discussions is a vitalcomponent of the course, and will improve and operationalize the students'English. Language work is based on a combination of the use of prescribedtexts and the papers in progress by the students. Students are alsoencouraged to provide material which relates specifically to theirdisciplinary needs.
